The United States must respond immediately and militarily to the chemical attack by Syrian President Assad in the rebel-held town of Douma, where 42 people died, Saturday, April 7, 2018. It was just a year ago that President Trump responded to Assad’s sarin attack on the village of Khan Sheikhun by successfully launching Tomahawk missiles at a Syrian airfield.

The Russians are alleging that the chemical attack did not occur. They are calling the reports of a chemical attack “fake news.” However, the video transmissions belie the Russian claims. Rescue workers on the ground stated the people present with symptoms consistent with exposure to an organophosphorus compound.

President Trump wrote on Twitter:

“Many dead, including women and children, in mindless CHEMICAL attack in Syria. Area of atrocity is in lockdown and encircled by Syrian Army, making it completely inaccessible to outside world. President Putin, Russia and Iran are responsible for backing Animal Assad.
“Big price to pay. Open area immediately for medical help and verification. Another humanitarian disaster for no reason whatsoever. SICK!”

Syrian President Assad has long confirmed stockpiles of chemical weapons, but he has long denied using them on civilians. He has stated that they are intended only for defense, should a foreign country attack Syria. Clearly, he has lied time and again.

In 1968, Syria agreed to the Geneva Protocol, which prohibits chemical warfare. The International Criminal Court has jurisdiction over war crimes. Russian President Vladimir Putin, who has continued to support the Assad regime, has publicly reminded Syria of its obligations under the Geneva Protocol, after Assad’s acknowledgement of chemical weapons stockpiles.

This latest use of chemical weapons could trigger co-operation between the UN and the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons under the UN Secretary-General’s Mechanism for Investigation of Alleged Use of Chemical and Biological Weapons and Part XI, Paragraph 27 of the Verification Annex to the Chemical Weapons Convention (CWC). Although, Syria is not party to the 1993 CWC, which prohibits chemical weapons use, if such crimes are referred to the Criminal Court by the UN Security Council, Assad should find himself in The Hague facing war crimes charges.

Only President Trump and the United States military can eradicate the Syrian stockpiles of chemical weapons, the Syrian airports and the Syrian military capability. Assad must be stopped. President Putin must align with President Trump and help the United States rid Syria of Assad.

A deal can be brokered, which will allow Putin back into the G7. This latest chemical attack is Putin’s opportunity to save face and get back on the world stage.

The people of Syria must be saved from the Monster Assad!!
