Iranian President Hassan Rouhani on Sunday inaugurated the first phase of the Chabahar Port in the Sistan-Balochistan province, opening up a new transit route between India, Iran and Afghanistan by-passing Pakistan.
The port in the Sistan-Balochistan province lies outside the Persian Gulf and is easily accessed from western coast and is considered as a gateway to good opportunities for trade with central Asian countries. In the presence of several representatives of the region,the first phase of this project was inaugurated by the Iranian President and he said ” the routes of the region should be connected on land, sea and air.
This port is aim to do trade between India, Afghanistan and Iran in the wake of Pakistan denying transit access to India for trade with the two countries. India is closely working with Afghanistan to create alternative and reliable route by-passing Pakistan. Over a month ago, India sent its first consignment of wheat to Afghanistan by sea through this port, making opening of new transit route.
