Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-Wen is afraid. She’ been threatened by what she diplomatically calls “overseas forces,” clearly referring to China. It’s easy to see why, they’re threatening the United States for helping her. The official message from Beijing is also politely veiled diplomatic doublespeak.

On Friday, Wang Yi, China’s top diplomat, warned the U.S. “not to play with fire. “That means they’re furious. “We urge the U.S. to fully recognize the gravity of the Taiwan question.” They are terrified because President Donald Trump is about to hand the frail looking Taiwanese leader enough firepower to set off her own “Salute to America” style fireworks display, only with live rounds.

China wants the world to support their control over Taiwan. So far, Washington pays them lip service, recognizing that Beijing and not Taipei, calls the shots, while helping Taiwan out under the table.

The upcoming U.S. arms sale, worth an estimated 2.2 billion dollars, will provide Taiwan with M1A2 Abrams tanks, Stinger missiles, and other related equipment.

President Tsai arrived in the United States Thursday for a reception with 17 of their diplomatic allies, Reuters reports. This angered the Chinese government, who insisted that the United States shouldn’t even let Tsai into the country. China doesn’t recognize Taiwan as independent. They’re a” rogue and wayward province.”

The U.S. is in a trade war with China over their unfair trade practices so China unsurprisingly criticized the deal. That doesn’t scare Taiwan’s president. “Taiwan is not and will never be intimidated.”

“The challenges we face only serve to strengthen our resolve to engage with the international community. The 23 million people of Taiwan have a right to participate in international affairs and this right should not be subject to political preconditions.”

Pro-China and pro-Taiwan protestors battled in front of the hotel where the delegation was staying. after broken up by police, Tsai safely arrived at the planned reception, where she gave her speech.

President Tsai also plans a 2 day stop in the Caribbean to meet with diplomats before ending her stay in the Western Hemisphere with a 1 day return stop in the United States, on the way home.

Taiwan is an ally of the United States and one with whom we share common interests. We assist and defend the people of Taiwan and will continue to do so. In a time when China continues to increase and expand its military capacity to challenge, rival, and even to overtake that of America’s. This alliance is needed more than ever.
