Trump Administration official Ken Cuccinelli went on CNN’s “New day” with Alisyn Camerota on Friday, defending the Trump Administration’s new proposal. Any migrant family caught crossing the border illegally can and will be detained indefinitely.
Cuccinelli promises that the new proposal will make migrants think twice before jumping the border. “This is a deterrent,” he assures.
Instead of massive numbers of immigrants rushing the border, “which is what’s been going on for a number of years now,” under what is known as the Flores rule, the new plan is to hold them until their court hearings.
The new administration policy will essentially end the Flores settlement agreement practice of “catch and release,” where migrants caught at the border are detained, given a court date, and then released into the country. Most often, they never show up for their court date.
President Donald Trump’s new proposal will give the federal government new authority. Under Flores, any children at a “non-licensed” facility could not be held be any longer than 20 days. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials determined that they can use existing state licenses and ICE standards to hold a family as long as it takes.
Cuccinelli called this new rule a deterrent, saying, “this solves the problem by demonstrating to families that are considering coming to the southern border illegally, that they will be detained for the duration until their hearings can be held.” He also said that no longer would migrants be released into the country, “never to be see again.”
Kevin McAleenan, Acting Homeland Security Secretary, stated last week that he believes the Trump Administration will probably face litigation against the new rule, but that he hopes that the new policy will be implanted as soon as possible. This common sense enforcement measure is expected to be implemented very soon.
It is insane to release migrants into country, especially when that is exactly why they were detained at the border in the first place. Everybody knows the vast majority totally ignore their court dates. Where else do they do anything as crazy as that?
