Texas Republican Senator Ted Cruz came out swinging in a tweet Monday afternoon. In the aftermath of the deadly mass shooting in Odessa, Texas, liberals have been screaming for gun control. Cruz infuriated progressives by pointing out a huge flaw in their logic. Over Labor Day weekend, 37 individuals were murdered in liberal, gun restricting, Chicago, Illinois.

“Gun control doesn’t work,” the Senator’s tweet read, “look at Chicago. Disarming law-abiding citizens isn’t the answer. Stopping violent criminals-prosecuting and getting them off the street-BEFORE they commit more violent crimes is the most effective way to reduce murder rates. Let’s protect our citizens.”

Chicago, which has some of the strictest gun control, also has some of the highest violent crime rates. Their murder rate, according to the FBI’s 2009 population estimate per 100,000 people, was 24.13%.

In comparison, the crime rate for the conservative Senator’s hometown of Houston, the largest city by population in the State of Texas, was 11.50%. El Paso, Texas, which is the sixth largest by population in the state, had a murder rate of 2.76, one of the lowest for a city of its size.

Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot responded to Senator Cruz’s tweet by pointing that 60% of the guns used in gun crimes in Illinois came from out of state. She pointed out that they’re mostly from “red” republican voting states like Texas.

Without admitting that laws don’t prevent guns from falling into the hands of criminals, she sidesteps the issue. Why are the criminals committing these crimes in Chicago, and not Texas? Could it be the lenient justice system of Illinois? Capital Punishment was abolished in Illinois in 2011.

“60% of illegal firearms — coming from states dominated by coward Republicans like you who refuse to enact commonsense gun legislation. Keep our name out of your mouth.” The Mayor tweeted.

By mentioning that the firearms purchased from out of state were illegal, she proved the Senator’s point. New gun control legislation is not what’s needed, but tougher prosecution of crimes and sentencing standards.

Enforce the law. That is what we should be doing. Not, as the Senator tweeted, continuing to disarm law-abiding citizens.
