Kamala Harris is trying to please the climate change crowd with more aggressive green plans. She wants to phase out each and every gas powered car by 2035. Carbon neutral standards will be built into building standards and utilities will be encouraged to convert to renewable energy sources.
If we survive, by 2045 we’ll have “a clean, carbon neutral economy,” she promises. Her plan to achieve it is by “using progressive year-on-year benchmarks that target individual sectors, including energy, transportation, infrastructure, industry and agriculture that meet appropriate goals for reducing emissions,” Harris’ plan pledges. In other words, she’ll set the targets and leave it up to industry to invent ways to meet them.
As President, she promises to work with her indigo blue home state of California on tailpipe emissions, considered a leading cause of greenhouse gases. She’ll be reinforcing the infamous Clean Air Act of 1970, which has restrictions outside the federal government. She wants to go even further than these restrictions. Everyone groans when they hear the phrase “California emissions” now.
Federal emission rules alone discourage the internal combustion engine. In order to pass an older vehicle, you have to alter it so it doesn’t run right. All the vehicles used in transporting her and the rest of us will have to be replaced. Until then, we’ll all be walking.
A bill by Democrat Oregon Senator Jeff Merkley, would phase out gas powered vehicles over time, encouraging electric and hydrogen fuel cell powered engines. Her plan wants that done five years sooner.
Harris plans to offer a new “cash for clunkers” program that would increase vehicle tax credits. The last “cash for clunkers” program destroyed the after market parts industry. Profits couldn’t be made by stripping cars so they’re just scrapped now. Some cars might have been just fine with just a handful of parts. Another thing she forgets is that not everyone can afford to trade their clunker in. They’re stuck with whatever they can keep on the road.
She estimates her proposal would cost $10 trillion with both public and private funding. Even though politicians are used to throwing around mountains of money like that, her figure is just the tip of the iceberg when you factor in the impact it will have on business, industry, and the public.
As an afterthought, she wants to throw money at the western United States, to “help implement wildfire protection plans.” She hasn’t figured out how much they need because she has no idea what their plans are.
Kamala has officially joined the pack of Democrat candidates with a climate change plan of her very own, after Sen. Cory Booker, Urban Development Secretary Julian Castro and Sen. Bernie Sanders announced theirs.
Rural communities and communities of color might have “a seat at the table in decision making,” according to Harris and Booker, but that’s as far as that promise goes. You can sit there and look good for them but you might not be listened to.
In spite of her support of various climate change plans, Kamala has always struggled to please environmental activists.
