President Trump ordered all flags lowered to half-staff on Sunday in the wake of two deadly mass shootings. American flags at all U.S. military bases, federal facilities, and the White House will remain in the half-staff position through August 8.
Expressing support and condolences, President Donald Trump sympathized with the nation that “we share in the pain and suffering of all those who were injured in these two senseless attacks. We condemn these hateful and cowardly acts.”
“Through our grief,” the president continued, “America stands united with the people of El Paso and Dayton. May God be with the victims of these two horrific crimes and bring aid and comfort to their families and friends.”
President Trump also spoke to the press in Morristown, New Jersey on Sunday. “Hate has no place in our country, and we’re going to take care of it.”
The president confirmed he has spoken with Attorney General William Barr, FBI Director Christopher Wray, and representatives from Congress. President Trump will be speaking live Monday morning to “release a more substantive statement.”
President Trump recognized that the most serious underlying factor, in all the recent tragedies, is that people aren’t receiving proper mental health treatment when they need it the most.
Both of the suspects in this weekend’s incidents were “really very seriously mentally ill,” the president observed. “As bad as it was, it could have been much worse. We have to get it stopped. This has been going on for years.” Progressives are using the events to cry for stricter gun control. President Trump has acknowledged that despite Second Amendment rights, things might be improved in the area of background checks for firearms purchases.
“Republicans and Democrats must come together and get strong background checks.”
Recognizing that he’s making a concession to Democrats, he suggests they could help him with security issues at the same time. President Trump envisions “marrying this legislation with desperately needed immigration reform.”
Conservatives are quick to remind that guns aren’t the only weapon used in mass killings. If we’re going to focus on guns, then we need to focus on trucks, construction vehicles, even rental trucks filled with fertilizer.

Emmanuel Aranda terrorized a shopping mall and an entire city without a single weapon. He tossed a five year old boy off a third-floor balcony at Minnesota’s Mall of America. Now we have a copycat. Just this morning, CNN reports “a teenager has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder after a boy was thrown from the 10th floor at the Tate Modern gallery in central London on Sunday.”
