On August 21, Liberal rights group Pueblo Sin Fronteras captured footage of African migrants pelting Mexican military police with trash cans and bottles.
Police are seen going one-on-one with protesters, using riot shields for defense, An apparently unconscious policeman was filmed while being carried into an ambulance. Rioters can be heard cheering in the background. A demonstrator is shown unconscious on the ground. Authorities say he “fainted.”
The fierce battle broke out in front of the 21st Century Migrant Holding Facility (“Estación Migratoria Siglo XXI”), run by an arm of the government “that controls and supervises migration,” for the town of Tapachula, in Mexico’s state of Chiapas. As RT News reports, “the demonstrations at the government-run migration center began peacefully enough earlier this month, but have grown increasingly agitated as migrants realize getting to the U.S. is no longer as easy as showing up and claiming asylum.” The troops were dispatched to deal with it.
The National Guard troops were well equipped with riot gear as they engaged in “heavy clashes” with the hundreds of angry protesters. The African nationals, mostly from the Democratic Republic of Congo, Somalia, Angola, Senegal, and Cameroon, were demanding travel documents. They were shocked to learn about President Donald Trump’s new policy of making Mexico responsible for securing their side of our border. They didn’t get “no steeenking documents.”
Alain Tita Mongu left Cameroon in early May. He took a plane to Ecuador and crossed into Colombia. From there, he made his way through Panama, Costa Rica, Nicaragua, Honduras and Guatemala. Then he was stopped dead in his tracks. “Two days after I arrived in Mexico, I was put in immigration detention in Tapachula for having entered the country illegally.”
When they turned him loose, he thought the paper they gave him was his free pass. “Two weeks later, they released me and handed me a document that I thought would guarantee me freedom to travel through the country.”
For years, they had been told that all you had to do was use Barack Obama’s magic password, “asylum” and you practically got a free ride to the United States. “Some of the Africans who arrived in Mexico a few months prior had explained to me that’s how it works. So I immediately hopped on a bus going north.” He couldn’t read Spanish.
“About an hour and half into my journey, there was a security check and I was sent to Tapachula. It turned out that the document that I had didn’t even authorize me to leave Chiapas. I had to go to the Mexican immigration service. Once there, I realized that my document was utterly useless because it stated that I was ‘stateless.'”
If the refugees from Ebola can’t come here, they’ll settle for Canada. One thing is clear, they refuse to apply for asylum in Mexico. “Basically, we’ve been here for weeks. All we want is a document allowing us the freedom to travel across Mexico and not to be forced to claim asylum. We don’t want to claim asylum here,” one migrant relates.
More African migrants than ever have opted to come to America since European nations slammed their open-door migration policy shut.
