The rampant corruption in congress is exactly what prompted conservative voters to elect outsider Donald Trump as our president.
With Republicans like California’s Duncan Hunter in office, it’s easy to see how the progressive globalist agenda has managed to get so far out of hand. Illegal aliens have obviously been given priority over housing and basic sanitation for citizens of the Golden State, but nobody is lifting a finger to stop it.
On Thursday, Margaret Hunter, wife of the U.S. representative, entered a guilty plea on federal charges that she appropriated $250,000 from her husband’s designated campaign funds as part of a deal she made with prosecutors.
She agreed to testify in front of the grand jury looking into her husband’s part of the case “and tell everything she knows.”
If the judge approves the agreement, Margaret Hunter will serve five years in prison, followed by five more years under probation. A fine of $250,000 will also be imposed.
As reported by Reuters, it is alleged that “they spent campaign funds on items ranging from a holiday in Italy to Minnie Mouse ear headbands at Disneyland.”
According to the grand jury indictment, the Hunters also used campaign funds “to pay for their children’s private school tuition,” and on “lavish travel including restaurant meals that frequently cost hundreds of dollars.”
The grand jury also alleges that the couple lied when confronted with the discrepancies, “saying it went to charity or campaign events.” The prosecutors say otherwise. “It was really used for groceries, restaurant meals and clothing,” they argue.
Previously, in August of 2018, the couple both pleaded not guilty. Rep. Duncan Hunter still faces charges.
Tom McNamara and Logan Smith. Mrs. Hunter’s attorneys, released a statement explaining:
“I have accepted full responsibility for my conduct. I am deeply remorseful, and I apologize. I am saddened for the hurt I have caused my family and others”
Duncan Hunter insists that the case against his wife is really a politically motivated witch hunt against himself personally. He’s convinced that, “the Department of Justice went after her to get to me for political reasons.”
“As Margaret’s case concludes, she should be left alone. I am the Congressman, this is my campaign and any further attention on this issue should be directed solely to me.”
That seems to be a reversal of his previous position. When he interviewed with Fox news last year, he insisted “he gave Margaret power of attorney when he was deployed to Iraq as a marine in 2003, and that she oversaw his campaign finances.”
Apparently it never occurred to him to question where the money for all the fancy Italian restaurants was coming from.
Duncan Hunter followed the footsteps of his father, Duncan Hunter, Sr. into Congress, where, as Reuters notes, he represents “conservative portions of San Diego and Riverside counties in a seat that is generally considered safe for Republicans.” That is, it was generally considered safe.
