Police in Lufkin, Texas have arrested the girl who licked an open carton of ice cream, stuck it back in the Walmart freezer, then walked away laughing. The incident got so much social media attention that it started a wave of copycat contamination.
Authorities aren’t releasing her name because she’s a minor and she’ll be prosecuted as a child. An adult would be facing up to 20 years in prison. “food tampering is not a joke,” Blue Bell Creameries warns.
According to a statement released by Lufkin Police:
“We have identified the ‘Blue Bell licker’ as a juvenile from San Antonio. Under Texas law, anyone under the age of 17 is considered a juvenile.”
“The suspect is tied to the Lufkin area through her boyfriend’s family. We have spoken with her boyfriend, who is an adult, as well. They were both forthcoming with what occurred and admitted to the act.”
Tracking the girl down was complicated by the fact that someone else took credit for the crime. They aren’t going into details but whoever it was, might have known the real culprit. They used a screen name that was only a single character off from the accused.
“What made this case difficult is that a ‘catfish’ with a similar screen name (within one letter of the suspect’s screen name) began taking credit for it.”
Whoever it was posted a chilling challenge on Instagram. “Yeah, I really did that. You can call it Flu Bell ice cream now ‘cause I was a lil sick last week. Repost yourself doing this. Let’s see if we can start an epidemic (literally).”
The sociopath’s boyfriend is an adult and police are considering prosecuting him after they complete their investigation. “As to whether her boyfriend will face charges, we are currently discussing his involvement with prosecutors.”
They haven’t mentioned the fact that he’s dating a girl who’s under the age of 17, but there could be additional charges stemming out of that.
With over 10 million views, the video shot by the San Antonio juvenile delinquent has inspired others to take the challenge. Someone using the Twitter handle @GAYSHAWNMENDES visited CVS to take a selfie. Titled, “I love ice cream,” he uses his hand to scoop out a sample, puts it back on the shelf and hurries away.”
He didn’t get far. A couple hours later, he uploaded another video showing him talking with police followed by a comment, “Just left the police station. Too much clout to care.”
Yet another lick and scoot video was posted on Instagram by @shelley_golden. She wanted the attention but was smart enough not to commit any crimes. “the whole thing was staged.” She paid for the ice cream before she shot the video. Young and impressionable viewers would never know that though.

Ice cream isn’t the only product under attack. Twitter user @bameronkaii sampled some mouthwash then spit it back into the bottle. He has 14.5 million views and counting. One person commented, “Everyone that does this needs to be prosecuted for endangering the public with their komodo dragon spit.”
