Kashmir , one of the Muslim populated state in India, witnessed widespread protests against the US move to shift its Israeli embassy to Jerusalem, forcing the Indian authorities to impose restrictions in Srinager and place separatists under house arrest.
Friday prayers were not allowed at Srinager’s historic Jamia Masjid which hosts one of the biggest congregations in the valley. The head priest, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and who is also chairman of all parties of the Hurriyat Conference, was not allowed to step out of his house in Nigeen. “The authoritarian regime restrictions and disallowed Muslims from offerings for Friday prayers and registering their resentment to the US decision,” said Mirwaiz. He termed the US move “unacceptable to the Muslim world.”
However, the post prayers were held where devotees held anti US demonstrations. Protesters also set an effigy of US President Donald Trump on fire. A protest march was held in Budgam and some areas where people witnessed stone throwing and clashes.
