On my drive home from Florida two years ago, I stopped overnight in the Town of Mount Airy, North Carolina. I noticed a group of men talking and being friendly joined their conversation. I mentioned that I used to be in the furniture retail business and purchased furniture for resale from Mount Airy Furniture. I explained that I used to purchase from a lot of companies that were situated along the figure 8 highway that was between High Point and Raleigh North Carolina.
Every furniture manufacture found in American had showrooms and or factories along the route. We were a large chain in Canada and were the first retailers in the country to cross the border and purchase American goods for resale in Canada. The reason for this was that Canadian manufacturers could not supply the quantity we needed to supply a growing country.
Our American suppliers were companies such as Thomasville, Burlington, John Widdicombe, White, Hendriden, Heritage, Lane, Blowing Rock, Bassett, Stickly, Baker, United, etc. These men told me that they used to work for Mount Airy Furniture but the company no longer existed. In fact, none of the companies I mentioned manufactured anymore. Everything has gone to China. They call it world globalization.
None of these skilled carvers and furniture makers worked in the industry anymore as it did not exist. Generations of skilled workers who created magnificent furniture designs such as George and Alice Sheridan, Duncan Phyfe, George Tiffany, Green and Green, no longer exist.
Stickley, the last remaining manufacturer gave up their business recently because the last of the family retired, Luckily one of their major retailers, a large firm in Chicago bought them out and kept them open. I really felt depressed because a lot of the owners of these companies were personal friends of mine as well. Donald Trump is trying to renegotiate unfair trade agreements that killed manufacturing in America. and appears to be having some limited success. Unfortunately, the Liberal Democratic Party could not care less if their country goes bankrupt as they are Globalists whereby every other country except their own deserves to be successful at America’s expense.
They hate anyone who is a Patriot who loves their country. Hopefully, Trump will succeed with his economic policies and America will rise again as a top manufacturing country with highly skilled artisans at the helm.
