AOC Proposes New Socialist ‘Anti-Poverty’ Scheme

Bronx Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez spent her summer vacation cooking up a series of big government, budget-busting anti-poverty schemes, which she unleashed on the world Wednesday.

These proposals would give more people — including illegal immigrants — access to federal programs like Medicaid. Ocasio-Cortez plans on bloating government beyond both FDR and LBJ’s wildest dreams. Let’s not forget that big government social programs have done very little to lower the poverty rate. The only thing they’ve actually succeeded in is fostering greater dependency on the federal government and keeping people in poverty.

The only federal anti-poverty legislation that actually worked was the Welfare Reform Act of 1996. The law was perceived as a “reassertion of America’s work ethic,” by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce.

AOC calls her proposed legislation “A Just Society,” designed to inspire visions of President Lyndon B. Johnson’s “Great Society.” She cringes when she thinks about America being “great” so she had to get rid of that word for sure. Her plot aims to expand benefit access and would raise the federal poverty line. She wants to allow applicants to deduct expenses like child care and internet access from their income calculations.

U.S. Census data indicates that 40 million Americans live at or below the poverty line. AOC wants to further adjust the poverty levels depending on local conditions. After 54 years of a “War on Poverty,” big government accomplished nothing more than a quagmire of people living in poverty, along with huge debt and budget deficits.

“In the sixties we waged a war on poverty and poverty won.” Ronald Reagan once said. Rep. Ocasio-Cortez’s answer is bigger government. Maybe instead of more federal bureaucracy, perhaps we should allow the states more freedom in how to spend funds to actually address the underlying social issues.

States and local governments, working with secular and faith-based charities and churches, would be better equipped to handle the problem. They are closest to it.

“I think one of the things that that we can get done is build popular support in acknowledging how bad the problem already is. In doing so we can actually begin to fundamentally address those problems,” AOC told NPR. “If we can acknowledge how many Americans are actually in poverty, I think we can start to address some of the more systemic issues in our economy.”

Government created the problem in the first place. When President Reagan, in his first inaugural address said, “In this present crisis, government is not the solution to our problem, government is the problem,” he was referring to exactly these issues.

Embarking on another socialistic, big government program is not the answer. It won’t do anything to address the real issues and causes of poverty, and will only exacerbate the problem, not solve it.
