Gunfire still being exchanged several hours after the incident began. At least five police officers were wounded in a shooting in Philadelphia on Wednesday, according to a sergeant with the Philadelphia PD.

Update 8:50 p.m. A thunderstorm moving into the area has interrupted live coverage but the local network assures they will stay on the scene and resume spot coverage as soon as it is safe to transmit again. Shots are still being reported and the status of the officers inside the building is not clear, they may possibly be hostages.
Update: 7:50 p.m. EST Police told CBS news that two officers remain in the building with the suspect. The officers are on the second floor while the suspect is on the first floor. As the sun is going down, a SWAT vehicle was moved into place and a spotlight is being set up. Five officers were shot, one in the head. None are reporting life threatening injuries. A sixth officer was injured in a car crash on the way to the scene. Four women were removed from the building earlier and they praised police for “keeping them safe.”
The officers are at area hospitals with non life-threatening injuries. A police spokesman confirmed to the Associated Press that a gunman was actively shooting at officers in the Nicetown section of the city. Sgt. Eric Gripp tweeted said there was at least one person firing at police officers. Video shows a massive police presence in a neighborhood with dozens of police cars and officers, many of them with their guns drawn.
police were first called to the scene for drug activity, Police Capt. Sekou Kinebrew told CNN. The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives said numerous agents are responding to the scene to assist Philadelphia police. Police are asking that news helicopters stay away from the area as they are hindering operations. The incident has turned into a barricade situation. Officials from ATF confirm they are on the scene, assisting local police a heavily populated section of Philadelphia.
